A book by Volodymyr Stanchyshyn (UA). Ukrainian title: Стіни в моїй голові. Жити з тривожністю і депресією.
Volodymyr Stanchyshyn is a psychotherapist from Lviv who works in cognitive behavioural therapy. Fear and anxiety, he argues, are protective mechanisms: they kept our ancestors alive and are the reason we were born at all. So anxiety is normal, and all of us are anxious. We cannot be rid of it for good, but we can learn to handle it and to live with it.
He describes how anxiety grows into panic attacks and what can be done before it does. Separate chapters deal with the states and clinical disorders behind it: anxiety, panic disorder, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. He also writes about what goes on behind the scenes of psychotherapy, about its ethics, and about how to tell that it is time to see a therapist.
