In the autumn of 1793, in the polluted lake of Fatbureni, where water washes away garbage from all of Sodermalm, a distorted corpse is found. The investigation of the mysterious deceased is taken on by Cecil Winge, a former prosecutor who has already helped the Stockholm police solve crimes more than once. However, his health is deteriorating daily, and it seems that this case will be his swan song. Time is running out, and the coming winter promises to be the most difficult in decades. By revealing the stories of four characters in the novel, Niklas Natt och Dag shows the reader the luxury and decline of the post-Gustavian era, the triumph of carnal desires and bloody crimes, of misery and despair — but also of hopes and aspirations for change that laid the foundations of modern Swedish society.
